Description

This WordPress plugin provides an easy way to get the current status of a SHOUTcast server and integrate it into a WordPress blog. It detects the currently playing song and provides links to listen to the SHOUTcast stream on Winamp, iTunes, or Windows Media Player.

Instructions

You can find the instructions for this plugin at the official WordPress plugin repository.

Support (Please read)

UPDATE – Dec 7, 2007 – I have tested this plugin with the latest version of WordPress (2.3.1), and it currently DOES work. If you are getting the error, “Server is currently down, check back later” from the plugin (and your SHOUTcast server is actually running), chances are 99% that your web server cannot make a connection to the URL you entered in the configuration. This could mean that either: you entered the URL incorrectly; your web server cannot resolve the domain name; your web server PHP config does not support the necessary calls to reach external sites; OR your web server cannot directly contact external sites. In the case of the later, your web server MIGHT support going through a proxy, in which case if you have the necessary proxy server information, you can try the beta version of my plugin found in the comments below. Otherwise, there’s nothing I can change to the plugin to fix it for you. Eventually, I’d like to improve the error message to at least explain what the problem is, but for now, this is the best I can do.

As of right now I have NO time to devote to supporting or improving this plugin. You might be able to get some help by reading the comments below, but I don’t have time to give any additional support at this time. If you or someone you know would be interested in taking over this project from me, please contact me and we could arrange something.

For those of you who still cannot get this plugin working, I might have found a better solution. Visit http://www.amptracker.com/ and sign up there. I have not tried them personally, but they are “a hosted Shoutcast and Icecast statistics tracking service” and their “amptracker widget has the ability to poll your station and display album art on the fly. Broadcasters can insert the NP widget into their webpages, giving their listeners instant visability into who is playing ‘right now’.” This appears to be a more complete solution that should be able to get around the problems that my widget has. If anyone tries them, please leave a comment below to let everyone else know how their widget is.

zmin: It looks like your hosting provider has disabled the PHP option “allow_url_fopen”, in other words they implemented extra PHP security around opening remote files using a URL. ( more info here: http://us3.php.net/filesystem ) One solution would be to get them to re-enable this option in PHP, however, depending on your provider, they might not want to do this. I will look into changing the code to work around this limitation.

I’m building a radio station web site around WordPress, so this widget should be ideal. However, I cannot get it to show in the widget config screen. I’m very familiar with how to install widgets (I’ve got loads on my personal blog at http://theeye.kimjac.com). It shows up in the plug-ins OK, I can activate it fine, but it not appearing so I can drag and drop it to a sidebar and add the server URL from the Shoutcast Stream.

  10. Wesley said,

    on November 22nd, 2006 at 9:01 am

Eyebee: That’s odd. Once you activate the plugin, do you see “SHOUTcast Widgets – How many SHOUTcast widgets would you like?” near the bottom of the widgets screen? This has to be set to at least “1″ for you to be able to drag and drop. If that isn’t there, try the old version of the plugin (here: http://www.wesleyevans.net/releases/sc_widget100.zip) and let me know if that works. It doesn’t support multiple instances so it uses a different algorithm which might work for you. Also, what version of WordPress are you using?

  11. Eyebee said,

    on November 22nd, 2006 at 12:05 pm

I don’t have the “how many”. I havethose for RSS feeds, text, and ad rotation, but not one for your wdiget. I’m using the latest WP – 2.05

I’ll try the 1.00 version and see how I get on. Right now I don’t need multiple instances – not on the station blog – although it could be useful on my own personal blog – and it’s not working there either!

  12. Eyebee said,

    on November 22nd, 2006 at 11:40 pm

I tried that version 1.00, and that doesn’t’ appear to work either. I wonder if it’s the version of WordPress that has anything to do with it at all? Thanks for your responses, by the way. It was much appreciated.

There have been a few bugs reported with my plugin. Since I’ll have some free time around Christmas I’ll try to fix as many of these as I can during that time. If you’re having a problem that hasn’t already been mentioned above, or if you have more information about something above that might help me figure out what’s wrong, let me know so I can address it during the holidays. Thanks for the feedback!

    Hey Wes -

I’ve installed the Shoutcast plugin, but it keeps telling me that the server is
not active. However, when I go directly to my shoutcast page at
    http://visionshosting.net:8004 it works fine.

    Any ideas?

    Brad,
I looked into this and apparently your server was marked as “private.” My script never anticipated this, so I fixed it and released a new version that you can download and it should work. Thanks for the feedback and let me know if you have anymore problems!

I have released 1.3, which should provide an alternate solution for zmin’s problem as well as a few other tweaks. This does not fix Eyebee & Simmer’s problems, but I am still looking into that. Let me know if there are any other problems with the new release. Thanks!

Nice Plug-in ! I’m a newbie to this , and I have correctly installed your plug-in , but I cant get anything to show in the window. I think I’m putting the wrong format in for the URL. I have viewed your listed way to place the URL. But is there a special way / path I should include. I want to use a Shoutcast streaming station. But unsure of the way it should be copied then pasted into URL. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks !

  20. Wesley said,

    on January 11th, 2007 at 4:24 pm

Reed, take my SHOUTcast server for example. Under the URL setting on the configuration page, I would enter EXACTLY the following:

    http://www.wesleyevans.net:8000

If you open this page in your web browser, it should be the page that displays your, “SHOUTcast D.N.A.S. Status.”

  21. on January 14th, 2007 at 12:19 pm

Hi wesley. I have problems with the plugin too. I instal it well, drag it in the widget sidebar, but when i configure the url, it doesn’t show nothing, stay loading, but doesn’st show nothing. I tried with my station, with your station, with the release 1.o… but nothing. Could you help me?
    Thanks!

    Hello,

I have installed the WordPress Widgets plugin but all my theme’s files are located in wp-content/themes/….(I use orange-v1),
I can’t see a “Sidebar Widgets” item in the Presentation menu and consequently I cannot use your SHOUTcast widget…what can I do ? Thanks you in advance .

  25. daphnis said,

    on February 1st, 2007 at 6:02 pm

o.k… my theme orange-v1 is not compatible with the widgets plugin…I have a new compatible theme but :

Fatal error: Call to undefined function curl_init() in /www/site/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/sc_widget/sc_widget.php on line 51…?! what can I do ? Thanks you.

  26. Wesley said,

    on February 2nd, 2007 at 10:11 am

    To Daphnis:
There are instructions for making your theme widget compatible on the widget plugin’s homepage. As far as the “curl_init” error goes, curl is the fallback method my plugin uses for connecting to SHOUTcast. It should only need to use that if the “allow_url_fopen” option is disabled in your PHP. There are a few ways to get this working.

    1. Install the libcurl package as explained here: http://us2.php.net/curl
    or
    2. Possibly the “allow_url_fopen” setting is being detected wrong, you can try using the old version of my plugin which does not support curl: http://www.wesleyevans.net/releases/load.cgi?sc_widget12.zip
    or
    3. Set the “allow_url_fopen” setting in your PHP.ini file to true (if you have privilages to do this)

Let me know if any of these work for you.

To Paul & Simmer or anyone else who can’t get the plugin to load or site to come up after enabling it:
I don’t have this problem on mine. Let me know what kind of setup you are running. Follow the instructions here ( http://codex.wordpress.org/Finding_Server_Info ) to get your server information and copy-and-paste your info here so I can try some more things to replicate this problem.

    Adri:
If you are still getting the error against my server, from your server command line, type “ping http://www.wesleyevans.net” and let me know if it is able to ping or if it gets an error.

  27. on February 6th, 2007 at 8:08 am

Hi Wesley, i tried to do any ping, are ok, the error is
Warning: file_get_contents(http://www.wesleyevans.net:8000/index.html) [function.file-get-contents]: failed to open stream: Connection timed out in /home/eiris/public_html/indahouse/mymusic/wp-content/plugins/sc_widget/sc_widget.php on line 44
Server is currently down, check back later

Bus is the same with all the url that I try… i dont know :(

Could we contact by msn? my address is tupacsoul@gmail.com

    Thanks

  28. on February 6th, 2007 at 8:17 am

The error is in the file_get_contents function… I activated it in PHP.ini… I tried everythings :(

Hello! I’ve been trying to get this plugin working for sometime. It’s perfect for my needs and I would really love to use it.

Basically what happens on my end, I install the plugin, I activate it, but it never shows up as an available plugin for me to drag and drop. I’ve updated WordPress to the latest release, I’ve tried multiple themes, and nothing seems to work.

Please lend me a moment and see if we can figure out what is wrong. Much appreciated!

    Hi There,

It looks like i may be having the same problem as Adri? The plugin is appearing fine in the sidebar…..only issue is that no matter what shoutcast URL I type into the appropriate box, I keep getting a “server is currently down, check back later” error. This includes your stream URL as well. I tried the ping, but not sure if I did it right — but nothing changed.

This is the most critical aspect of our site (streaming our SC), so certainly willing to pay you a bit for possibly looking into the site itself and seeing what you see……..

This looks like just what I need. I’ve activated the plugin and dragged the widget to my sidebar, but all I see on my blog is the title of the shoutcast station, no matter what URLs I enter. I’m pretty familiar with WordPress and really wish I could get this to work… What am I doing wrong?

  34. kelpie said,

    on March 25th, 2007 at 4:02 pm

Update: okay, so now I can sort of get it working (I had uploaded the folder directly instead of renaming it to sc_widget, which caused the earlier problem), but now I’m getting the same problem as mentioned above: “server is currently down, check back later” even when the server is definitely up. I’m using wordpress 2.1.2 and php version 4.4.4. Do you need more information? Thanks in advance for any help.

  35. Dr. Trey said,

    on March 26th, 2007 at 5:21 am

I actually think its the wordpress 2.1.2 . I don’t know what version i was running before but it ran on that so I think I’m gonna try downgrading my wordpress to see if this works. Wes, if you’re planning and update or if you know what the problem might be please let us know.

  36. kelpie said,

    on March 26th, 2007 at 9:34 am

Pls let us know how you get on with downgrading, Trey…

  37. Wesley said,

    on March 26th, 2007 at 11:33 am

In an email, Dr. Trey let me know that he is having the problem on his godaddy.com hosted account. I signed up for an account and I am going to test it on there to see if I can replicate the problem. I will try to have a fix as soon as possible. BTW – I am running WordPress 2.1.2 on my site and the plugin is still working. I believe it has something to do with the specific host settings or OS.

  38. Wesley said,

    on March 26th, 2007 at 12:56 pm

I was able to setup an account on godaddy.com and I do get the same problem as everyone else where it cannot detect the running server. Here are the facts.

    1. The problem occurs on hosts where allow_url_fopen is disabled and my plugin falls back to the CURL library
    2. The CURL library is not able to reach the SHOUTcast web server

Now that I can replicate the problem, I hope to be able to fix it soon. I will keep everyone informed.

  39. kelpie said,

    on March 26th, 2007 at 1:06 pm

Thanks Wesley. It’s good to know you’re onto this.

  40. Wesley said,

    on March 26th, 2007 at 1:32 pm

After playing a little more, it appears that this error is most likely caused by a firewall blocking access from the web server to the SHOUTcast server. I’m not sure if it’s blocking all outgoing connections or just certain ports. Still experimenting, but if that is the case, then it will most likely require a change to either the web server or the SHOUTcast server. The other possibility would be to “push” information from the SHOUTcast server to the web server via some automated process. Will post as I find out more….

  41. KamiKaxxe said,

    on March 26th, 2007 at 3:08 pm

    Hi Wesley

Awesome your plug.. but i have a problem

It install ok.. and no problems

but some functions are missing.. some information

Stream title.. listener peak.. etc etc.. only shows.. current track and song history..

    http://radio.tokuriders.org.. what´s wrong?

  42. Wesley said,

    on March 26th, 2007 at 5:12 pm

KamiKaxxe: I have all “non-essential” statistics hidden by default. (My personal preference, but some people like them all). To enable the other statistics, edit the “sc_running.htm” file. The available statistics are at the top of the file, just remove the “<!–” and “–>” symbols & optionally move the statistics to where you want them to appear on the page. I will try to make this more straightforward in a future version.

  43. Dr. Trey said,

    on March 26th, 2007 at 8:57 pm

I have tried downgrading and no success. If Wes is running it on 2.1.2 then I’m actually going to upgrade back to that. I went down to 2.08. I wonder if all the problems are with people on Go Daddy.

  44. kelpie said,

    on March 27th, 2007 at 3:52 am

I am on 1and1, not Go Daddy, so the issue may be wider than that…

  45. Wesley said,

    on March 27th, 2007 at 10:32 am

While you may be using different ISP’s, the problem itself should be similar if not identical. You are both encountering situations where a request to access an external URL is blocked. Upon reading more, I’ve discovered that Godaddy requires all outgoing connections to use a proxy server. (i.e. a firewall is blocking outgoing access like I suspected) It looks like 1&1 also supports a proxy, but I can’t confirm if it’s required (although I suspect it is). I used to have a free 1&1 account, maybe I can dig it up and test it out.

I’m attempting to add support for proxy servers to see if this fixes the problems, but due to quirky behaviour with the SHOUTcast server, this is not proving simple. I’m fairly busy this week, but I hope to have something that you can test by the end of this weekend, but I can’t promise anything yet….

  46. Dr. Trey said,

    on March 28th, 2007 at 4:44 pm

Wes: Thank you very much for that information and for your continued efforts to fix it.

  47. Wesley said,

    on April 5th, 2007 at 12:53 pm

Status update: I have the basic code in for tunneling through a proxy, however, currently it only works for a Shoutcast server on port 80 (not 8000). I believe this might be a limitation of the GoDaddy proxy server so I have a support ticket into them to ask about available ports. Thanks for being patient and I hope to have more soon….

  50. Wesley said,

The following is my response from Godaddy:

    Dear Sir/Madam,

Thank you for contacting Online Support. Unfortunately, we would be unable to open up any additional ports besides port 80 for use on our shared hosting accounts. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Please let us know if we can help you in any other way.

What I’m going to do is post what I have so far as a beta. Other people who must use a proxy but are able to proxy to ports other than 80 should be able to use it. Also, if you are able to switch your Shoutcast server to run on port 80, that will also work. I will post this once I can clean it up just a little bit.

Given that the proxy solution will not work for everyone, I’m also working on another solution. Essentially, a 3rd party server would would retrieve the Shoutcast status every 3 minutes or so and would ftp that information to the web server. My plugin would parse that file and would never have to contact the Shoutcast server directly. At the same time, this would allow me to do caching, thus speeding up the performance of the plugin for users who are able to contact the Shoutcast server directly.

This of course would require the use of a 3rd party server. I do not know the best solution, but if there aren’t too many people needing this service, I could possibly do it from my own server.

  51. Dr. Trey said,

But i still cant get it to display anything other than the custom title. any update you have is very well appreciated. I am working on my friend’s server and have no idea weather it is Go daddy or someone else. Thanks for all the work you have put forth into looking into the matter.

SUCCESS!. I was digging into the code and i finaly got it to work! for the people who are having trouble with the plugin appearing or showing any signs of life, you have to edit the sc_widget.php file. the two lines are the ones that refer to the place where the sc_down.htm and sc_running.htm are located. I had to just add the folder of my wordpress installation, and bingo! there it was. This app works great! Only thing, it would be nice if it would auto update on song change, etc. maybe add some code that told it to repeat the process every minute or so, so to eliminate the 3rd party server

  54. Wesley said,

    on April 21st, 2007 at 2:10 pm

First of all, thank you Mikel for figuring out that problem! I will be sure to include a fix in the next version.

As for the “proxy” problem, I now have a solution you guys can test and it should be able to get passed “not being on port 80″ problem. Just unzip this file over the old version. You must also manually edit line 58 to use your web server’s proxy. It is configured for GoDaddy’s proxy by default.

    http://www.wesleyevans.net/sc133beta.zip

This is only a beta version and is only intended for those who need to use a proxy. If you don’t have this requirement, don’t try this version. I will clean the code up later so you don’t have to manually edit lines in the program. Let me know if this works. Thanks!

    http://www.shoutcast.com/sbin/shoutcast-playlist.pls?rn=4272&file=filename.pls

Above is the link which launches the station i’d like to link to the shoutcast widget.

The DNAS address is http://209.9.238.4:8164, which is actally one of several since the station has several clones on different ports. I tried inputting this address, with no luck. It causes the blog to load incompletely. When I leave the URL blank within the widget settings, the site loads fine, and the widget displays as it should: ‘Server is currently down, check back later’

Would appreciate any help in getting the station URL correctly.

Hmm, I am also on 1and1 shared Linux hosting. I am no teccie and certainly don’t understand how all this shoutcast stuff works, but what I can say is that, after I installed the new file and changed the proxy server address (to the NT one!), it worked for me on at least a couple of stations. It shouldn’t have, right?!

In the end I didn’t use the sc widget because I couldn’t get it to work with my client’s icecast server, and I’ve now handed the site over to the client so can’t experiment to find out what was going on. Maybe someone else can shed light on what I was doing right/wrong? My best guess, on reflection, is that my changing the proxy server had nothing to do with getting the widget working with some stations, and it must have been Wesley’s updated file alone. Sorry I can’t be more help.

Looks like on 1and1 linux hosting no proxy is necessary. I tried with various servers. Eventually something worked. Then i reverted back to the original php file and it still worked. So I added more widgets . . taht did not work . . it just showed more of the same shoulcast widget and ignored the settings of the second widget.

Took everything out . . . reinstalled. Still having problem 2. I just get multimple instances of widget 1 and widget 2 not showing. Strange . . .

Paul, I’ve had a similar problem trying to use multiple instances with another widget once I upgraded to WordPress 2.2. I’ll take a closer look at it when I get a chance.

Thanks Wesley. I will just set it for one stream for now. Great plugin by the way – really cool to be able to put this on the blog. Thanks for your help!

    Hey Wes,

Friend of mine has your plugin up and I love it, unfortunately it doesn’t want to work for me. It’s activated and added to the sidebar and I’ve put in the URL but as you can see on my site…it’s empty :/

Hoping you could help me out. It’s probably a stupid error on my part but we can’t get it going.

    Thanks :)

Hi, plugins working great! Do you think in the future you would be able to make the plugin cache the server info every minute or so, as its making our page load time around 1.5seconds. It’s making browsing the site quite slow and annoying, it’s slow as the source is on another server and not ours. I’ve removed them for now but if you make an option to cache the details that would be great. I’m going to look at the code and see if i can work something out.

I have found this which seem’s to work quite well but will need coding into your widget. If you decide to take this route will you email me at eddie.cooper@gmail.com, I’d really love to use your plugin but at the moment causes too much of a slow down. http://www.mikeindustries.com/blog/archive/2007/06/widget-deployment-with-wedje

    Hi Wes and the gang!

I have read through all the comments and have tried a few different versions of the shoutcast widget with no luck. I get the following: “Server is currently down, check back later” I have been looking everywhere to get this to work… someone please help! if you can get this to work i will give you a paypal donation.

    Thanks,
    Chris

I, also, am getting the ‘server down’ message. This is a clean, new install of 2.2.1 and have installed Spam Karma 2 as my only other plugin. The shoutcast server is my own on a Linux machine, so I know it’s up and working. This is EXACTLY what I am looking for, because I’m creating the blog around my internet stream.

Could it be the new version of WP that’s causing this?

    Hey everyone,

I am really having a tough time getting my WP page to display the last 75 or so songs played on my stream. I got the ‘current song’ covered well, but I just can’t get a page together that displays the last bunch of songs played and updates etc etc.

    any thoughts, so much appreciated

    What could it be.

I have in my PHP.ini allow URL open
then my provider open port 8870 thats the port of my shoutcast server.

tried the beta but still appears

Server is currently down, check back later

It`s not the shoutcast server because i tried with other shoutcast and the same thing

What other thing i can check?

One common error may come from the fact that in the PHP files the widget is included from a sc_widget directory while the directory fro the downloaded ZIP archive by default is: shoutcast-sidebar-widget. Therefore when the plug-in is installed as plug-and-play it cannot find its directory and displays nothing. Simply, for users: make sure that the directory where the plug-in is installed is named sc_widget. If not (1) rename the directory and (2) reactivate the plug-in. for the author: keep directory names consistent. And thanks for the great plug-in.

    This plugin is totally outdated.

It could be nice if someone got it compatible to the newer WP versions.
